Farm News from Shelley (3/3/12)
In September 2010 the USDA certified all four of our farms as ORGANIC and all of our cattle ! In a few weeks we
will be able to provide you with USDA certified organic, 100% grass fed beef that has the stamp on the label.  Our
processor has submitted their application for organic certification and had their audit.  They passed with flying
colors so now we are waiting for the folks in DC at the USDA to approve our final label.  This is the last, and
necessary, step to getting the USDA stamp on our meat.    At this time, we are offering  grass fed beef from
organic cattle and raised on certified organic pastures. Clemson University is our certifying agent.  All meat is
100% grass fed, no added hormones, no antibiotics beef, no corn or grain - ever, not 'finished' on anything other
than pasture grasses and hay.  Our animals are never penned and  spend their complete lifetime grazing on local
pastures.  Call, email, or just come by during Friday farm store hours from 2-7 pm. The farm is located at 150 Old
Home Place, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Back in the summer we spent a very long day working the big herd of 150 animals at our Blacksburg farm. Cutting bull calves, ear tagging all the new
calves, preg checking a few cows and such.  It was a long hot day in the sun and afterwards Dad decided we could be more efficient with improved working
facilities.  Change things to accommodate the larger number of cattle, the greater number of calves that had to be handled at a time, and be safer for us
and less stressful for the cows and calves.  This is not an inexpensive undertaking, so much thought went into the purchase.  Dad went to several feed and
seed operations around the state to look at different brands and researched which would offer the most value and hold up over the course of time to a
large herd of such large animals.  Which brands were the best?  We went with the Powder River brand and ordered a new head gate, sorting bucket, calf
table and chutes.  We also utilized the open sided barn we already had to house everything to provide shade from the summer heat. It was pretty exciting
when the tractor trailer pulled down to the barn loaded with all the new parts.  It was like putting together giant legos that can only be moved by tractor
and must be arranged in just the right position, down to the inch, so they would fit together according to the plans he had drawn. It took quite a few days
work, and several folks working at a time, to get everything in place and properly secured together.

Here's the tractor trailer with all the new goodies!  It's kind of like getting a new box of furniture from Ikea that comes with abbreviated instructions and
'Some assembly required' written on it.  Only, they forgot to mention the tools needed would be a tractor and chains just to move the parts from one point
to another!  Minor detail!   Just unloading it very carefully took some figuring and putting it all together lead to some serious head scratching and chin
pulling. By the time we got it all installed it was an engineering marvel.  The flow of cattle through the pens that start off large enough for the entire herd
then break down into gradually smaller holding pens and wider alleys leading to smaller chutes as they are sorted along the way into the sorting bucket or
calf table or large cow head gate or other holding pens and a loading chute and pen also.  Very confusing.   Dad went through half a tablet of grid paper
making different layouts of what might work before he ordered anything!   Now for the moment of truth!  Would it all come together as planned?

This is the headgate being moved, oh so carefully so it won't swing! It's headed to the barn in the back of the photo. It's no ordinary head gate.  It will
probably be around longer than I will, has a chest stabilizer and a special door at the back so the vet can work safely on a cow and it's so much easier to use
than our old rusty one.

This is a calf table. It's like a miniature head gate meant for smaller calves so we can tag and castrate them without having to actually hold them.  This is less
stressful for the calves and safer for the wranglers as they are squirmy little boogers and they kick like mad!  They do not care to be held down while the vet
takes care of business! It makes a day when we have 40 calves to work a lot less tiring for everyone! It also was put into the open barn at the end of a
smaller calf sized chute leading into it and a holding pen in the shade for after they have been tagged.

That's our big news! Thanks for continuing to support us as we move into our 3rd year of providing you and your families with the best grass fed, certified
organic beef around.  With these new trinkets we'll be able to do so more safely and for a long time to come!
Here's to greener pastures,
